Foundations

The other day Jackson asked me to play the 3 bigs and the big bad wolf with him at least 10 times. So I figured for family home evening we would talk about building strong foundations. Pretty big words, but he understands the story and we sang the wise man and the foolish man and built strong/weak foundations with blocks.
Well, Adam is back building houses and just so happened to be pouring foundations this week. So we decided to gave have lunch with daddy-o and see the foundations first hand. Jackson put on a hard hat and went right out in the field with dad. He loved it and asked questions and they were out there for 20 minutes while I was sitting in the car with Porter. It was so cute to see Jackson out there in his hard hat with all the workers just watching everything that was going on. It was cool to actually show him what we were talking to him about and teaching him. Thanks Adam.

I promise he had fun
Contrary to the look on his face, Jackson had fun. We went to a climbing gym and let Jackson climb as much as he wanted. He stole the show and had crowds watching him. We let him go as high as he wanted, which was usually a few feet higher than Adam. He also had a good time bouldering with the boys and falling on the crash pads. My camera ran out of batteries after these first pictures when he was trying to figure out how to come down, so this is all we got. What a fun night though. Adam and I had so much fun. We were so crazy we even went to Denny's to get some french fries and ice cream. We almost felt like we were in college again. What fun.

Swing, Swing, Swing
Porter is...
Porter is 17 lbs 7 oz and is 6 months old. He is growing so quickly and it is fun to see his personality emerge. Here is a picture that Jackson snapped of him and they seem to enjoy each others company quite a bit. He is always happy to smile at anybody, including the nurses who had just given him a shot.

This is the time...
So I got up the guts to go out in the ocean by myself because it was pretty calm. Everyone else had packed up to go home, so Adam stayed in with the kids. And while I was out I had just gone over a wave and the water was low and there was a seal right there. It was cool to see, but made me feel far too vulnerable to be out there by myself. So I went back in. And next time I will bring somebody out with me. (I was trying to get Jackson to come out with me because it was a nice ride, but he opted to stay dry and warm on the beach).

Letter Factory

I had heard a few separate sources mention how much they have liked this movie for helping kids learn the alphabet and its sounds. So we tried it out and I think that it really helps. It has sparked a lot of conversation about different letters and their sounds and some spontaneous singing as we work. Any other good ideas for teaching letters?
What I am enjoying...
I have been reading David McCullough's biography of John Adams and I am almost finished. Imagine my delight when I found that this series just came out. Adam and I watched the first two parts this last weekend and we both really enjoyed it. I can't wait to watch the rest and finish the book!
